La Trobe University - ACC3TAX: Taxation

This subject, Taxation (ACC3TAX) - provides an understanding of Commonwealth income tax legislation and the implications of income tax on individuals and businesses. A problem solving, application-based approach is taken to the subject matter. You will study the general concepts of assessable income and allowable deductions (including substantiation provisions) and be introduced to capital gains and fringe benefits tax. The taxation of entities will also be covered, including the taxation of partnerships, companies and trusts. The subject will also cover the basic aspects of tax administration and assessments, objections and appeals.

On successful completion you will be able to: 

• identify the sources of Australian taxation law and the framework in which taxation is administered;
• explain various types of taxation including income tax, taxes on capital, goods and services tax, and fringe benefits tax;
• critically apply fundamental tax concepts, legislative provisions as well as judicial principles to analyse personal, property, and business taxable income and tax payable scenarios; and,
• critically analyse the issues associated with international transactions.
