RMIT University - LAW2453: Taxation 1

- This course, LAW2453 provides you with a sound understanding of the principles of taxation in relation to income tax for individuals and trading entities. The course considers the provisions of the Income Tax Assessment Acts of 1936 and 1997 and gives emphasis to the issues of assessable income and allowable deductions in respect of both the common law as well as statutory provisions. It also considers the Fringe Benefit Tax Assessment Act 1986 and the Goods and Services Tax Act 2000. The course also emphasises presentation and research skills combined with formulation of arguments based on legal principles. In these respects, the course plays a vital role in professional development of accountants and other professionals such as financial planners.

• develop specialised knowledge and skills across a variety of taxes, including the fundamental principles of Australian income tax, capital gains tax, fringe benefits tax and goods and services tax;
• investigate and apply principles of taxation law for a variety of taxpayers, including individual and business entities;
• analyse, interpret and evaluate sources of taxation law, including legislation, case law and ATO guidance, to investigate and resolve a variety of tax problems;
• and - consolidate and synthesise specialised knowledge to generate and communicate professional judgement for variety of taxation issues.
