University of New England - ECON376: Applied Econometrics

Advance your understanding of econometric models and learn to confidently use these tools in your economic, business or finance research projects. This practical unit will equip you with the skills you need to appropriately apply econometric methods by using instrumental variables, panel models, time series models and discrete choices models. Topics include regression with endogenous variables, fixed-effects/random-effects models, simultaneous equations models, ARCH/GARCH models, non-stationary methods and Probit/Logit/Tobit models. Using real-world examples drawn from both microeconomics and macroeconomics, you will gain insights into when and how particular techniques are used. You will also gain practical experience using an econometrics software package to solve problems and exercises.

Upon completion of this unit, you will be able to: 

• demonstrate a specialist understanding of econometric techniques used for the estimation of simultaneous equations;
• construct a synthesis of econometric techniques used for the estimation of panel models, time series models and discrete choice models;
• critically evaluate the role of computers in the estimation of systems of equations, panel models, time series models and discrete choice models; and,
• critically evaluate the limitations and potential uses of econometric techniques in the analysis of economic behaviour.
