University of Wollongong - STAT251: Fundamentals of Biostatistics

This subject, Fundamentals of Biostatistics (STAT251) - enables students to understand the statistical content of articles in their own discipline. Includes exploratory data analysis; samples and populations; elementary probability; the Normal, binomial and Poisson distributions; estimation and confidence intervals; hypothesis testing for means, proportions and regression analysis; sensitivity and specificity.

✔ On successful completion of this subject, you will be able to: 

• apply Exploratory Data Analysis, both with and without the use of a statistical package, and present the conclusions of that analysis;
• explain concepts involved in designing experiments and collecting data;
• interpret and model practical problems, by application of sensitivity/specificity analysis, and by the use of the Normal, Binomial, and Poisson distributions;
• select and apply appropriate statistical techniques, including confidence intervals, one and two-sample t-tests, chi-squared contingency table tests, and linear regression; and,
• critically evaluate and draw conclusions from health research papers which use simple statistical tools.
