Course Description:

Macroeconomics examines the behaviour and performance of the economy as a whole. This course explores how economists use models to understand the behaviour of key variables—output, employment, inflation, interest rates, and exchange rates—and how these models are evaluated with evidence. It also considers how governments, central banks, and international institutions in shaping outcomes through fiscal and monetary policy.

By the end of the course, students will have a clear framework for understanding how households, businesses, and governments interact, and will be able to apply macroeconomic reasoning to real issues such as recessions, growth and sustainability, building the foundation for further study in economics and related fields.

Course Aims:

The aim of this course is to provide a broad overview of how the aggregate economy works. It offers a well-rounded introduction to modern macroeconomic theory, equipping students with the analytical skills needed to understand and evaluate real-world macroeconomic issues.

Relationship to Other Courses:

ECON1102 is a core requirement for all students in the Bachelor of Economics. It provides a rigorous foundation in modern macroeconomic theory and serves as a core prerequisite for all upper-level macroeconomics courses, as well as many advanced economics electives. In addition, the concepts, models, and approaches developed in this course provide a foundation for business studies in accounting, finance, marketing, management and related fields.

No previous study of economics is assumed although being familiar with the concepts introduced in ECON1101 (Microeconomics 1) is recommended.
