Course Description:

What can the data tell us and how can we tell apart correlation and causality?

This course introduces the use of econometrics to explore and estimate economic relationships. Emphasis will be placed on cross-sectional data, and on understanding the conditions required for inferring causal relationships. We will tackle linear regression models, and give particular attention time series and panel data models, highlighting their relevance for economic analysis. Next, we will also consider extensions that address common data analysis complications, including heteroskedasticity, proxy variables, and other limitations. Practical computer-based exercises are integrated throughout, enabling students to gain hands-on experience with econometric software.

By the end of the course, you will have the skills to critically interpret empirical relationships and a foundation for more advanced courses in econometrics.

Course Aims:

The course aims to develop students’ ability to use regression techniques to investigate economic relationships and draw valid inferences.

Emphasis is placed on understanding the assumptions underlying econometric models, addressing common data and statistical issues, and applying methods to real-world problems.

Prerequisites: ECON1203, COMM1110, or equivalent courses (see Handbook)

ECON2206 is a prerequisite for ECON3208 (Applied Econometric Methods) and ECON3209 (Statistics for Econometrics).
